How did Shah Rukh Khan get the biggest film of his career after Tom Cruise turned him down? It is hard to imagine the famous Bollywood film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ) without the pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. However, a surprising revelation has come out that Shah Rukh Khan was not the first choice for the film.
Director Aditya Chopra had initially chosen Saif Ali Khan for the lead role of Raj in this film, but the matter could not go ahead. Interestingly, the film was to be made as an Indo-American project, in which Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise was to play the role of Raj.
According to reports, Tom Cruise demanded a compensation of $ 8 million (about Rs 28 crore) for the film, which was 90 percent of the film’s budget. Hearing this, Yash Chopra advised Aditya Chopra to rewrite the script, after which Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol were selected for the film.
Released in 1995, the film proved to be a box office hit due to its stellar performances by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, beautiful European locations, and strong storyline. The film, which grossed over Rs 102.5 crore, is one of the most successful Bollywood films.
