From “One Film Wonder” to Bollywood Legend: Aamir Khan’s Journey After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

Aamir Khan, known today as Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist, has had a fascinating and often challenging career. As the celebrated actor turns 60 on March 14, he opened up about his journey at the Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jajba film festival in Mumbai. Legendary screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar interviewed the superstar in an intimate, insightful conversation.
Aamir reminisced about his debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), a romantic tragedy that became an instant classic. The film’s massive success turned Aamir into an overnight sensation. He revealed that shortly afterward, he was flooded with offers—nearly 300 to 400 film proposals came his way!
However, Aamir admitted that the initial euphoria was short-lived. “After the success of QSQT, many of my films bombed at the box office,” he shared candidly. The string of flops even earned him the industry label of a “One Film Wonder.”
Reflecting on those difficult days, Aamir confessed, “I lacked experience. I didn’t know how to select the right films or whom to politely refuse. Despite working three shifts a day, I wasn’t happy. I would go home and cry.”
What hurt him most was that none of the directors he had dreamt of working with approached him. But it was during this low phase that Aamir Khan learned his most valuable lessons.
“I realized that a good script isn’t enough. The director, producer, and their intentions matter just as much,” Aamir explained. Eventually, he decided to take charge of his career. He became highly selective, setting strict principles about the kind of work he would take on. This turning point marked the beginning of his transformation into one of the most respected and successful actors in Indian cinema.
Today, Aamir Khan stands tall as a visionary actor, known for his dedication, integrity, and an eye for quality storytelling.
